Fastnet Lighthouse
Fastnet Lighthouse is a 54-metre-tall (177 ft) lighthouse situated on the remote Fastnet Rock in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the most southerly point of Ireland and lies 6.5 kilometres (4.0 mi) southwest of Cape Clear Island and 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from County Cork on the Irish mainland. The chart below shows it’s position with an arrow. The current lighthouse is the second to be built on the rock and is the tallest in Ireland.
Many people will associate Fastnet with the bi-annual ‘Fastnet Race’ which is a a biennial offshore yacht race organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) of the United Kingdom with the assistance of the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes and the City of Cherbourg in France. The race is named after the Fastnet Rock which the race course rounds. Along with Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the Newport-Bermuda Race, it is considered one of the classic big offshore races with each distance approximately 625 nautical miles (719 mi; 1,158 km), testing both inshore and offshore skills, boat and crew preparation and speed potential. Fastnet Underwriting has no connection or affiliation to the Fastnet Race or any of its sponsors.
Fastnet Underwriting was named after the Fastnet lighthouse and rock because it symbolises a bedrock of stability while also projecting a beacon of hope, a guiding light for our customers.
